Kaspersky Safe Kids

Safe Kids is a multi-platform service (web, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android) for parents to protect their kids while the latter use all kind of devices. Main features: searching kids location on a map and setting safe perimeters, protection from adult and inappropriate content while browsing, apps restrictions and device usage time limits.

It's a very ambitious project with various functions and simultaneous development for all platforms.

We had two UX designers in this project including me. I worked on mobile versions (iPhone, iPad, Android phone and tablet) and Mac version. I was from time to time involved in web part as well and participated in usability tests.

Kids' devices

It all starts with intalling Safe Kids app on child device and creating child profile.

Safe Kids is ready and good to go as soon as installed on Android device.

iOS is a different story. It's a very closed platform and it doesn't allow much to do outside of the app sandbox, so we had to do some tricky stuff. Parents can see all nuances in a quick slideshow.

Parents' devices

Most interesting things are left for parents devices where they can set up child rules and keep an eye on their kids.

One of the most eagerly sought features is monitoring child location by their devices.

Does child stay at school on schooldays? Or maybe he went too far from park where he was supposed to play with friends? It's really time consuming and boring to check manually child's location all the time. Applying Safe Perimeters saves parent's time keeping him or her up to date automatically.

A parent just needs to drop a circle on desired location and set time and days.

Child rules and restrictions have everything needed to keep a child safe and secure in a cyber world. Once set, rules apply to every child's device linked with Safe Kids.

All platforms share single visual style and use same UX and UI decisions if they don't contradict with platform guidelines. Here is the same screen on different platforms:

We were in a development stage when Google introduced Material Design so we could not implement it right away. But it's one of our main goals for the next release. New design is ready and the development team brings it to life right now. Here is interactive prototype, feel free to click it:

Summary

It was a tough project but very useful to improve my working skills. Beta testing is finished, we had a soft launch in Russia and some Europe countries. It should be available worldwide in Q1 2016.

You can get mobile versions in AppStore and Google Play. Just search for Kaspersky Safe Kids.
